Unplugged Week- Nirvana

I was going to save these guys for the "Unplugged Week" finale but I left some of my Cd's in the car...and yes I'm too lazy to go get them. I live on the 12th floor of a building so I'd have to get on the elevator, put on shoes, etc. etc. I got this CD in high school when it first came out and it's still been in heavy rotation for me 13 years later. I'd say it's now a bona fide classic. Heeeeere you go!

Unplugged Week - Neil Young

Remember when MTV & Vh1 had cool shows like Unplugged, Storytellers, & Behind the Music instead of Sweet 16 & Look how fabulous Posh Spice's life is? I for one miss the unplugged shows but I guess when your main bands are Fall Out Boy and Nickelback it would be tough to pull off. Alright enough of my old man rant. As most of you know Nirvana Unplugged is being re-released this month with a DVD. (what a great album) I'll post a few tracks from that later on in the week. For now enjoy a couple tracks from this 1993 performance.

Artist of the Week - Henry Rollins

Hope everyone had a pleasant Thanksgiving. This post will wrap up Henry Rollins week. I'll try to return to doing these once a month like I used too because i enjoy spotlighting my favorite artists. Alright these two tracks come from Henry's most commercially successful Album Weight. (mainly due to the single "Liar") If you'd like to hear more from Henry, be sure to click on the Harmony in my Head link on my blog roll. Henry does a radio show once a week that you can stream where he spins all genres of music. He also hosts a show on IFC where he interviews celebrities, has musicians, and speaks his mind. Have a nice weekend....

Artist of the Week - Henry Rollins

Unfortunately I haven't been able to add Rollins Band onto my list, but they occasionally still get together so we'll see. I haven't seen the band but i have seen Henry do his spoken word performance twice. I tell you what, even if you're not big on his music i think you'd be thoroughly entertained at one of these performances. The man has some great stories and interesting views about the world. I highly recommend checking out one of these shows. I own a few of the spoken word Cd's (great for long road trips) so instead of playing a song tonight I'm gong to hook you up with a couple of Henry's rants.

Crazy Crazy Nights

Hello everybody out in the Internet world. Hopefully most of you are about to enjoy a four day weekend. I'm just sitting here, relaxed and listening to channel 53 - Soultown on my Sirius Boombox (James Brown - Hot Pants is on) Anyways I thought it would be fun (at least for me) to type out a list of all the live shows I've had the pleasure (and sometimes displeasure) of attending over the last few years. The venue's ranged from dark dank punk clubs in DC to Theatres to Coliseums to humongous outdoor festivals. Like I've said in earlier blogs, my first "real concert" was Metallica back in 1992..so that's where it began. I've seen a few of these bands 2,3,4 times..but i won't bore you with the details.Chances are I'll probably forget a few shows and I'm not going to try to list local bands or lounge acts at the Holiday Inn..ha-ha. I've got a pile of old concert tickets and Cd towers to help jog my memory. In no particular order, here we go:

Wilco, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Jimmy Eat World, Flogging Molly, Bobby Bare Jr., Metallica, Megadeth, REO Speedwagon, Huey Lewis & the News, Weird Al Yankovic, Tom Rush, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Buffett, Twisted Sister, Maceo Parker, GWAR, The Misfits, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Willie Nelson, The Get Up Kids, Hot Water Music, O.A.R, The New Amsterdams, Dashboard Confessional, Weezer, Tool, Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams, Ben Kweller, Culture, Fear, The Meatmen, The New Bomb Turks, Stretch Armstrong, God Forbid, Jeff Tweedy, David Lee Roth, David Allen Coe, Slick Rick & Doug E. Fresh, Vanilla Ice, Derrick Trucks Band Lollapalooza 1994: The Smashing Pumpkins, Beastie Boys, George Clinton & the P-Funk All Stars, A Tribe Called Quest, L7, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Green Day. Lollapalooza 1995: Sonic Youth, Hole, Cypress Hill, Beck, The Jesus Lizard. Lollapalooza 1996: Metallica, Soundgarden, The Ramones, Rancid, Screaming Trees, Wu-Tang Clan Vans Warp Tour 1997: Sick of It All, Pennywise, Less Than Jake, Decendents, Suicide Machines. New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival: Santana, Funky Meters, Shaggy, Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Keller Williams, Spearhead, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band. Well I think that's it for the "big name" bands. I'm sure I missed a few but I guess they weren't that memorable. By next year hopefully this list will be even bigger. On with the music!

Artist of the Week - Henry Rollins

Here's a couple live tracks from Henry's Black Flag days. If you want to learn more about Rollins's time with the Flag check out Get in the Van : On the Road With Black Flag. This book is filled with Henry's journal entries from his time with the band. It chronicles Henry's transformation from the manager of a Häagen-Daz ice cream store to fronting one of America's most revolutionary punk bands. (I've read it a few times over the years.) Some fans say Henry's time in the band ruined Black Flag but I happen to enjoy all the band's incarnations. Go!!!

Artist of the Week - Henry Rollins

Let's take a trip back to my high school years. I was 15 or 16 and frequently visited the Blue Dog record store in downtown Fredericksburg (which unfortunately closed a few years ago) This store had an incredible used CD section to browse through.(I'm not talking about 30 copies of Caption & Tennille's greatest hits either (no offense to the C & T fans) Anyways I'd heard of Henry Rollins through Blag Flag but i didn't know much about him or his music. The CD cover to the left struck my curiosity so I purchased the CD not knowing what to expect... what the hell i think it was like 5 bucks. Anyways I paid for the the CD, threw it in my car stereo and boom!I became a fan for life . The songs were heavy but you could understand the lyrics....and the lyrics spoke perfectly to me during those awkward teenage years. The songs are about frustration, heartbreak, and self worth. I've purchased many Rollins Band discs after this , but this still remains my favorite. We'll get into some other stuff as the week progresses.

Wild Card Wednesday - Jerry Garcia

I decided to stick with the hippie theme for this Wednesday's pick. Here's a couple tracks off Garcia's first solo album. Both songs would later become live staples at the Dead shows. Dig it.

It's Alive! - The Grateful Dead

I got my hippie fix for the year last night at the WMD's concert. I mainly went to see Keller Williams (you gotta support someone from your home time..Fredericksburg represent!) it was pretty decent but I'd prefer to see Keller's solo act. In honor of my "hippie weekend" here's some Dead. I'm not sure what the dates or locations are for these tracks but oh well. Enjoy.

Totally 80's Friday! - Run-DMC

In the words of Neil Diamond, "Hello Again." I made my annual trip to VA this past weekend for some Halloween fun (pictures to come-the Gene Simmons on the left side of the site is yours truly from Halloween '06) and the rest of this week has just been nuts. Let's kick the weekend off right with a little bit of the old school!! Word is born.
