Totally 80's Friday! - Eddie Murphy

In honor of Totally 80's Friday (and Eddie Murphy) I decided to share a little photo of mine from Halloween '07..not '87. That's me in the middle with my friends Caption Lou Albano and Cyndi Lauper.....yes i realize I'm almost 30 years old. Wow Eddie Murphy and Rick James working together. One can only imagine how many hookers and how much cocaine went in and out of the studio. No matter what happened they pulled off a pretty catchy tune. Have a good weekend!

Metal Monday - Scorpions

That's right! It's once again time for METAL MONDAY! Wow i'd hate to run into these guys in a dark alley. In my opinion the lead singer has one of the coolest metal names of all time (sorry Ronnie James Dio) Klaus Meine! Here's one rocker and one ballad. It's "Scorps" time!

Henry Rollins

Hey gang. I just rolled back into town a few hours ago from Asheville NC. I headed up on Friday to check out the man to your left do spoken word. This is the third time I've seen Henry do the spoken word thing and I think this was the most intense I've seen him. Topics this time around included: Henry's recent trip to an Aids Hospital in South Africa, his small part in a movie with Cuba Gooding Jr., his recent USO trips, Christmas, seeing a young Van Halen as an opening band blowing the headliner Ted Nugent off the stage, meeting Iggy Pop for the first time, doing a show with the remaining members of The Ruts etc.,etc. My only complaint about this show (which may sound strange) was that it was too long. He spoke non-stop for 3 hours and 15 minutes. I think I saw him take a drink of water once for about 5 seconds... And this man doesn't exactly speak slowly...I'd say he speaks just a tad bit slower than that guy from the Micro Machines commercials. Don't get me wrong it was still entertaining but it's hard to watch anything for three hours straight and not get a bit anxious. So the music entertainment gods had been in my corner this year (Rollins this past weekend, Wilco on Friday, Springsteen in April and perhaps Bonnaroo in June) However when i got home today I checked my email and had something from Ticketmaster..uh-oh. Apparently the Wilco show (which was supposed to be this Friday) has been postponed till August. I was a bit upset (wouldn't you be) so i went to their website to seek answers and i read that they are booked to play Saturday Night Live this weekend (the day after they were supposed to be in Charleston.) I think this was a pretty recent announcement so what i can conclude is they cancelled out to play SNL. I suppose i get it, that's pretty big exposure for the band and it's a strong vehicle to gain more fans....but what about the fans who bought tickets for this Friday's sold out show? The ones that have been loyal fans for years? If this is truly the case why they cancelled, it will leave a bad taste in my mouth about Wilco. If i find out their was some type of emergency I'll retract my statements, but as of now Cobra Kai will have a temporary ban on Wilco postings. Yeah I know big deal right. In the scheme of things i realize it won't affect the band.....(although one or two of you out in the Internet world may have been introduced to their music from this site...some of you may think i post too much of them anyways) but it's just my way of speaking out. Yeah i know i don't "soapbox" much on this blog but i had been looking forward to the show for almost three months and I'm a bit bummed/pissed off. Man I guess ole Henry got me all fired up! Alright enough said. Here's a bit of Henry in action. This particular rant is about 90's TV (it's from a 1998 show) and marriage. It's about 13 minutes long. Enjoy.

Television

Apparently this file was too large for my free Mediamax service. Here's a shorter rant...

Soundtrack Week - Into The Wild

I saw this movie a few months back but didn't buy the CD till a few weeks ago. I think I meant to purchase it earlier but if you're like me sometimes you're at a record store and you know you want something but your mind goes blank. (Call me old fashioned but I still go to an actual store to buy music) The movie was pretty good but I found myself paying more attention to the music than the actual story. If you haven't seen the movie or listened to the soundtrack I recommend both. It was a pretty amazing thing for a person to do...to live on your own terms , without rules or material objects. A Buddhist philosophy if you will. Some call it idiotic and some call it brave. I guess that's the point of the movie. I think we all have the itch every once in awhile to do something like this but few have the balls and/or stupidity (depending on your point of view) to actually follow through. Hey i''ll be the first to admit that I enjoy the modern conveniances of today's world...so would I do it? Hmmn... maybe for a week or two and then i'd want to come back to my oversized couches and digital cable. Till next time......

Both songs performed by Eddie Vedder

Soundtrack Week - Napoleon Dynamite

You know how sometimes you first see a movie and you think it's just "ok"? Then after about 10 more times it's one of the best things you've ever seen? Well that's what happened with me and this flick. I remember I felt the same way about Ice Cube's classic..Friday.(I'll try to dig something up from that movie sometime this week) I can't even count how many times I watched that movie in college. At one point I could probably recite the movie word for word.(Yeah my parents are very proud) "Man my grandmama gave me that chain!" Ha-ha Red was always my favorite. On with the music!

Soundtrack Week - Reservoir Dogs

I was out this past weekend and the name Kenny Logins came up in a conversation. It's hard to dispute that this man was the king of 80's soundtracks. From Top Gun to Caddyshack to one of my all time favorites...Footloose.This guy was on fire. I'll admit that i'd always get excited when Danger Zone came on the radio but my favoite soundtrack from my youth had to be Ghostbusters. Unfortunataly I lost my Ghostbusters tape years ago so I won't be posting any of those tracks. Let's kick things off with a 90's classic. Happy President's Day everyone.

Soul Music Sunday - Rick James

I didn't post anything for Valentine's Day this year so i thought i would end the week with a number for the ladies. Rick is at his romantic best with this one explaining how he "Used to love them and leave them. Use and abuse them." I'm getting teary eyed just typing this. This one features the soulful sounds of Teena Marie and ends with a xylophone solo. How could you go wrong?

LETTERMAN - Band of Horses

No Theme Monday - Band of Horses

So I can add another band to my "live list." I caught these guys last night in front of a sold out Music Farm here in ole Charleston, SC. Before last night i'd heard of these guys but I had only listened to one or two songs. Apparently they now call South Carolina their home so I figured I should offer some support. It's very difficult to enjoy a concert when you know none of the songs but I did hear a few that caught my attention....enough to purchase a CD. I'm not quite sure if i'm a fan yet but the songs are starting to grow on me. Here's what they opened with (one of the tunes that caught my attention) Oh yeah for whatever reason the spell check on my blog is busted..so please bare with my "mizpellings".

It's Alive! - Jeff Tweedy

The Vic - Chicago, Illinois
1/6/03

Oh yes, In about 3 weeks I'll once again see the mighty Wilco perform live. I'll be sure to celebrate this occasion by having another "Wilco Week"in the near future. In the meantime here's some solo Tweedy. Check out this version of Gun...it's my personal favorite performance of this track. Peace.

Happy Birthday Bob Marley!

That's right, Mr. Marley would've been 63 today. What can you say about this man that hasn't already been said? If you've seen any live clips of him it's very obvious how passoniate he was about his music. No choreography or light shows needed. He was one of the best. In honor of his birthday I suggest all white men and women cut off your dreadlocks. It's just not right. Who's with me! All you jazz fans make sure to check out the Skyline Jazz link listed under Mr. T. Thank you and goodnight.

Tuesdays With Dylan

Hello hello. I was lucky enough to stumble upon some Blonde on Blonde outakes about a year or so ago. Here's a couple jems that (for whatever reason) never made it on that classic album.
